Standup For the Cure Nominated for Prestigious SUP Award for Top Philanthropic Effort by SUP The Magazine
Charity Organization Encourages Public to Vote to Help Raise Breast Cancer Awareness
SEAL BEACH, Calif.—July 23, 2012—Standup for the Cure, an organization that raises funds for the Orange County affiliate of the Susan G Komen foundation, today announced it is nominated for the Top Philanthropic Effort award from SUP The Magazine. The public is encouraged to vote for Standup for the Cure at http://www.supthemag.com/sup-awards/vote/2012-top-philanthropic-effort/.
Standup for the Cure held its inaugural event on May 5, 2012, raising more than $60,000. The event set a Guinness World Record when Zane Schweitzer, ranked 4th 2011 Stand Up paddler in the world and winner of the 2012 Stand Up World Tour finals, led a throng of 700 paddlers through the Newport Beach harbor and instructed the largest Standup Paddleboard lesson to date.
“We exceeded our goals both in attendance and funds raised for Susan G Komen at our very first event. Being nominated for a SUP Award for Top Philanthropic Effort is the icing on the cake and we are honored by the nomination,” said Judie Vivian, founder of Standup for the Cure. “Every $125 raised will potentially save a life by enabling a mammogram and voting for our organization will advance our mission to help save lives.”
Schweitzer, an ambassador for Standup for the Cure and a top three finalist for a 2012 SUP Award for Top Male Paddler said, “I’m proud to be part of such an amazing organization. There’s a history of breast cancer in our family and Standup for the Cure positively impacts women by raising awareness of breast cancer while also raising funds for preventative screenings for those in need.”

Standup for the Cure is a Non-Profit Corporation formed in 2012 which raised more than $60,000 at its inaugural May event for Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world. More than 700 paddlers met up for the first Standup for the Cure in May this year to raise money and awareness for Breast Cancer detection. We had the privilege of presenting the check for $60,715 to the Board and Team at the Orange County Affiliate of Susan G Komen for the Cure. This check represents the total amount of funds raised to date and represents almost 500 mammograms for underinsured women! Since 1 in 8 women are affected by breast cancer, we have all truly lived up to our motto of "Have Fun and Save Lives"! Please continue to support our new goal of raising a total of $100,000 by next year's event on Saturday May 4th 2013!

Dave Shelton is a singer songwriter whose latest accomplishment is a song he wrote for "Major league Baseball 2006" for the Sony Playstation 2.

Brennan Rose is a talented waterman and world class Standup Paddle Boarder. Brennan was born in southern California and moved to Hawaii where he is a professional SUP instructor in Lahaina. He is dedicated to teaching watersports and has a lifelong passion for the ocean. Brennan and Zane are fellow competitive athletes and friends and we are so fortunate that Brennan will be teaching in The Zane Schweitzer Clinics!!
Leslie Kolovich talks with the founder of the event, Stand Up For The Cure and breast cancer survivor, Judie Vivian. Judie, an avid waterwoman was diagnosed with Breast Cancer 2 years ago, and without the digital mammogram her cancer would not have been detected. She was very lucky to have caught her cancer at an early stage and did not have to have any chemotherapy. From her personal experience with breast cancer and her love of watersports she decided to be an advocate for mammograms, and to work along side the Susan G. Komen Foundation and organize a Stand Up Paddle Event. Stand Up For The Cure is going to be a very powerful event, packed with great generosity!
Riviera Paddle Boards has created a Stand Up For The Cure Pink board that they are selling and 10% of every sale will go to the Komen Foundation. World Champion contender in Standup Paddle SurfingZane Schweitzer will do a free clinic for breast cancer survivors the day of the paddle event. There will be a Pink Paddle with a fleet of people on boards all wearing pink to really catch the attention of onlookers and press to help raise awareness. Victory Koredry has come up with a great logo for the event

Zane Schweitzer
Zane is one the world's leading SUP competitors, and has won many prestigious events around the world. He is ranked 4th on the 2011 Stand Up World tour and just won the Stand Up World Tour finals in Hawaii. Born in Maui to parents Shawneen and Matt Schweitzer, both world class windsurfers, Zane learned to surf and windsurf as a toddler. He became passionate about Standup Paddling in recent years and competes at the highest level. Zane loves to teach and recently was honored by the Peruvian government for his SUP Clinic in Peru!
Zane believes that you can never be too young to learn this fun sport!
Daniel and Matthew Hughes are the toast of Huntington Beach, aka Surf City USA!
